Job Purpose & Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
This position is a critical part of our product development lab, involving physical properties testing for the development of new products. This position will require expertise in various physical testing techniques, equipment and instrumentation, sample preparation, and data analysis. The types of physical properties testing will include: mechanical (tensile, compression, shear), impact, thermal, rheological, electrical, wear and friction. At least a working knowledge on thermoplastics materials and their compounds with a variety of functional fillers and additives is preferable. Proficiency in data acquisition and computer interfacing, testing and instrument control software, automation, and data networking is strongly desired.
The position will primarily involve all aspects of hands-on in-the-lab materials testing, including standard and non-standard sample preparation and test execution; developing new physical testing methodologies; and executing capital expenditure projects to identify, specifying, purchase and install new test instrumentation. The job responsibilities will also include ownership to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment, instrumentation and computer interfaces. The individual may be required to perform minor preventative & mechanical maintenance activities on these equipment and instrumentation. This position will lead development of new test methodologies and converting them into written standard operating procedures (SOPs), translating them to the local lab technician staff and training the local lab technicians.
This position requires excellent communication and project management skills to execute and meet milestones. This position requires superior organizational skills; handling multiple tasks and different protocols, coordinating samples, compiling data after testing, accurate and timely record keeping to recommend directions for further laboratory effort. This position requires good understanding of polymer materials science & engineering, strong understanding of the physical fundamentals of specific materials tests, excellent computer skills, an ability to apply scientific methodologies, troubleshooting/problem solving capability, and accountability. The position also requires operating safely within policies, procedures and regulations, participation and leading of SABICs internal safety & health management systems (SHEMS), ISO audits and OSHA programs.
Working effectively with minimal supervision, the individual should be able to perform a variety of non-standard tasks, design and execute experiments, and execute test requests through SABIC systems. Independently maintain complete and accurate records of all work. The individual must work well within a team matrix, display interactions and follow up with co-workers. The individual must effectively schedule and perform accurate work, make competent experimental observations, simultaneously perform various tests, and conduct all work in safe and responsible manner. Ability to lift 50 lbs. on occasion will be required. This position may require work hours flexibility.
SABIC Internal T&I Employees at grades 10-11 will be considered for this job. If T&I employee is selected for the role he/she will maintain his/her current grade and will be assigned work commensurate with their current grade.
External Hires and Non T&I SABIC employees will be placed on the SABIC Technical Career Ladder depending on experience level, degree and proven technical knowledge; and will be assigned work commensurate with that grade.
Requirements Position Requirements:
BS/BA degree in polymers or materials science or engineering; chemical engineering; mechanical engineering; or related major. Alternatively, a High school diploma or GED equivalent and at least 5 years of relevant hands on applied industrial experience in a physical testing lab environment.
Expertise in physical testing methods and experience in ownership of equipment and instrumentation
Excellent math skills including algebra
Demonstrated excellent organization skills and record keeping
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
Work overtime as required
Proficient in use of personal computer and Microsoft business/technical and Excel basics software
Ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally
Willing to travel 10% time to other SABIC sites globally or to external vendors

Desired Skill Desired Qualities:
